This magnificent
book is virtually a new edition. It has all new plates, and all
new text. The book is based on the peerless original collections
of Birdwings in the British Museum (Natural History). The specimens
figured are at best either unique type material of one kind or another,
or at worst historical archival material from the earliest days
of exploration and discovery.
The book also
includes many historic photographic 'firsts' of the living fauna
and their early stages and environments. There is also a new 4 x
colour map and a collection of selected male genitalic drawings,
together with figs of interesting morphological aberrations. The
taxonomy of the Birdwings by the author is classically Linnaean,
and absolutely up-to-date, including the description of one new
race, and clarification of the positions of several other taxa.
This is, arguably, the most definitive monograph on the Birdwing
Butterflies, and therefore will neither be equalled nor surpassed
for many years to come.
Again, we must
emphasise that this volume is unique amongst other books treating
the subject, because most of the specimens figured are either primary
types or of historical archival value. The colour printing with
the finest Japanese Toyo inks is exquisite, and of the most microscopic
detail throughout, printed on the best quality Japanese acid-free
art paper, and bound in heavy-duty genuine cloth.
Only
500 copies have been printed.
